Evaluation Of The Parents

Copyright Lisa L Wiedmeier
So you have finally decided to go to a dog breeder and buy a pure bred dog. The good news is the pure bred dogs are typically going to be healthy and have a predictable temperament. However, you will quickly find some negatives as well. The main negative you are going to see is the fact that their are so many dogs in a pound, why would you want to have a pure bred? Well, we are going to address that in a future article, this time we are going to cover why you need to be concerned about the parents of the pure bred puppy that you are planning on buying.

Parents Help Determine Temperament

Okay, we have already mentioned that when you are buying a dog that is from a breeder you will typically get a better temperament. However, what you do not realize is the majority of the time this temperament is going to be determine by the parents who are on the property. When you are able to do this, you will generally be able to get the judgement on your own of how the parents are behaving. If you go to the breeders house to see the puppies and the parents are growling at the porch at you, then they are either super protective or they have some issues with their temperament, which can carry over to the puppies at times.

Size Of The Parents

Okay, any breeder can tell you anything you want to know about the size of the parents. However, if you are getting a larger dog like an English Mastiff and you want them to be big for protection the breeder may tell you the parents are larger than what they actually are. By getting to see the parents, though, you are going to know exactly how large the parents are and will know if you should expect to see your puppy that is super small get that big or not.

A dog is a great choice as a pet. However, if you are getting a pure bred dog, you need to know more about why you should be selective about the breeder and the parents of the dogs. Once you know about these reasons you should be so selective, it is going to be easier for you to have a great dog that is going to stand by your side for years to come. Without this, you could have problems in keeping your dog alive for a long period of time or even in getting your dog to be a faithful companion with no issues to deal with.
